Total Light Measurement Seminar 2008

Date:13th November 2008
Times:9.30am - 5.00pm
Venue:Photonics Cluster (UK), Aston Science Park, Birmingham B7 4BB
Event:Light Measurement Seminar 2008
Seminar Organisers:Aston Science Park & Pro-Lite Technology LLP
Places:100

Aston Science Park and the Photonics Cluster (UK) have teamed up with Pro-Lite to organise its annual one day technical seminar covering the practicalities of measuring light sources and the optical properties of materials. This year’s “Total Light Measurement” seminar is aimed at scientists and engineers who wish to learn how to measure LEDs, lamps, lasers, automotive lighting, displays, signs, luminaires and solid state lighting.

The seminar will provide an introduction to the following topics, with the emphasis on practical measurement solutions:

  • The basic science of light measurements and expressing light source performance.
  • The optical properties of materials – reflectance, transmittance & scatter.
  • The selection and use of photometers, colorimeters and spectroradiometers.
  • Spectrometer operating principles and their application.
  • How integrating spheres simplify complex light source measurements.
  • Spatial light source measurements - the power of the imaging photometer.
  • Goniophotometry – making angular measurements of light sources.

The speakers will be Robert Yeo from Pro-Lite who designed and delivers the popular “Practical Light Measurement” training course provided by the Photonics Cluster (UK), and Dr Nick Barnett of Ocean Optics who is a specialist in the field of spectroscopy.

The seminar will include an open question and answer session, a tour of the Photonics Cluster (UK)’s photometric test laboratory and practical demonstrations of many of the instruments discussed in the talks.

Pro-Lite is a specialist supplier of equipment and services for optical radiation measurement and is partnered with five of the global leaders in photometry, radiometry and spectroscopy: Labsphere for integrating sphere systems; Radiant Imaging for imaging photometers and near-field goniophotometers; Ocean Optics for spectrometers; Konica Minolta for light meters; and Optronik for far-field goniometers.

Who Should Attend:
The seminar is intended for scientists and engineers working in the field of light source measurements and testing the optical properties of materials. The event will also be of interest to those involved with calibrating remote sensing systems, or evaluating the performance of electronic imaging equipment and detector arrays such as CCDs and CMOS sensors. Spectroscopic techniques reviewed include reflectance, transmittance and absorption measurements, UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy, spectroradiometry, Raman spectroscopy, LIBS, colour measurements and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Speakers:

Robert Yeo

Robert Yeo is an optical physicist educated to Masters level. He has held senior technical marketing and managerial roles since joining the photonics industry in 1988. Robert was appointed Managing Director of the light measurement specialists, Labsphere Ltd in 1996 and in 2002 became a founding partner in Pro-Lite Technology LLP. Robert has worked in the field of optical radiation measurement, radiometry and photometry since 1990. He has given conference presentations and papers relating to laser safety and the science of optical radiation measurement and testing of LEDs. Robert has the ability to make complicated subjects accessible so was invited to develop this Practical Light and Colour Measurement Course. He has successfully delivered the course to over 100 delegates since 2005.
