Heartlands Medipark in Birmingham

The Master Plan
Working with the City Council, the Master Plan for the scheme incorporates an exciting design to bring public transport to the front door of the hospital entrance building. Patients and visitors will be able to take the bus to the hospital rather than use their car or obtain a lift. The recently completed new hospital entrance building is the hub for visitors to the hospital and includes a cafe restaurant in which to rest whilst waiting for your bus; latest technology will advise those waiting that their bus has arrived. The proposal to bring the bus to the hospital front door is supported by the Local Transport Plan.

A recent study commissioned by the Medical Technologies COG at AWM and Medilink West Midlands into Mediparks in the West Midlands region was supportive of the proposed developments for the Heartlands Medipark and the Bio Tech Incubator at Pebble Mill. The findings of the study recognises the strong strategic fit of the Heartlands project within the region and at a local level, whilst highlighting the R&D links which will encourage collaboration between the Hospital and the MedTech and healthcare industry; and recommends that AWM invite both projects to progress to the next stage of formal assessment.

Key Milestones

  • Work on the infrastructure will commence in 2008
  • New bus lane to the hospital front door to be completed in 2008
  • MIDRU is set for completion in late summer 2008
  • First Medipark building to be open in 2009

Lovejoy of Birmingham acted for the partnership to develop and obtain approval for the Master Plan. Turleys of Birmingham obtained outline planning permission. RLF of Birmingham have assisted with cost consultancy advice and project management.

The Regeneration Zone and Regional Development Agency are fully supporting the project. The East Birmingham North Solihull Regeneration Zone, ebns, has approved a concept paper and their Board endorsed support in principle for the scheme. The Medipark will provide a much needed boost to the local economy and provide opportunities at all levels for local people. Advantage West Midlands has been working with Aston Science Park to enter the partnership to bring the project forward.

At a regional level the Medipark will become a flagship for medical research taking full advantage of sitting next to a hospital with an excellent reputation for research and development.

Heartlands Hospital has now embarked upon building the MIDRU (Medical Innovation Development and Research Unit). MIDRU is a clinical and research centre of excellence. The Trust is the only Foundation Trust in the region already taking innovative projects in collaboration with industry and this can be scaled up within the new facilities. MIDRU and Heartlands Medipark will foster innovation across the region as a whole, which will complement and allow collaboration with other proposed schemes (Warwick and Birmingham based).

The Trust leads national and internationally recognised research in diabetes, respiratory medicine, vascular medicine and surgery, anaesthetics, critical care and pain, infection control and cancer. Medipark occupants will benefit from being based in close proximity to NHS clinical and research expertise.
