Aston Science Park Join Pole Position

Formula Student Team, with Eve Gaut & Jodie Batchelor

After a fraught year of design, building, testing and sheer hard work, the Formula Student team from Aston University finally made it to Silverstone, thanks to the help and continued support from their sponsors, including Aston Science Park.

Formula Student was launched in the UK in 1998 by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.  It is an international competition in which students from around the world design and manufacture a single seater racing car, within a very tight budget and in accordance with strict safety guidelines.

Once complete the car is then launched at Aston Business School part of Aston University, allowing media, academics, local and international companies and sponsors to meet together in viewing the most recent Aston development.

The Aston Formula Student Car

After the car has been built and tested appropriately and then launched the post graduate students working on the live project head to Silverstone to race the car. This year the Aston Formula Student team finished in a respectable mid table position, however they could have finished in a respectable mid table position, however they could have finished in the top ten if it wasn’t for a broken driveshaft that caused problems during the final endurance test meaning the team could not complete the race.

The 2008/2009 season will be the ninth year of competition for Aston Formula Student, and the goal of ‘The Pursuit of Excellence’ will hopefully be achieved by a top ten position when racing at Silverstone in July 2009. The forthcoming year will focus on development rather than a complete redesign as was achieved this year. As sponsors of Formula Student again for the forthcoming season, Aston Science Park will continue to support this exciting and innovative project over the next twelve months.

Marketing and Sales Manager for Aston Science Park, Matthew Hidderley, said ‘Aston Science Park are committed to building relations with our academic partners Aston University and therefore we are delighted to be supporting this engaging project which does an excellent job of promoting the Park through the sponsorship and continued support that we offer them’.
