Cyber-Crime Fighter to Visit Birmingham

September 06, 2006

One of the world’s leading experts on computer security is to help West Midlands businesses in their fight to combat organised crime on the Internet when he visits Birmingham later this month.

Ex-FBI agent Ed Gibson, Microsoft UK’s new Chief Security Advisor, will be chief guest speaker at a Roadshow event, arranged by The Next Generation User Group (NxtGenUG), which is being hosted at Aston Science Park on September 20 to generally raise awareness of the issues surrounding computer security.

The Roadshow, commencing at 4 pm, is one of five events taking place at various locations around the UK which are being organised by NxtGenUG and Scottish Developers in association with Aston Science Park and iCentrum, the AWM-funded initiative to help growing SMEs in the ICT sector, which has its headquarters on the Science Park.

NxtGenUG is a Developer User Group set up by iCentrum member company Ridgian’s Chief Software Architect, Dave McMahon, and two colleagues from 1st Software Limited, Richard Costall and John Price, who are based in Warwick. Their aim is to enlighten developers based in the Birmingham and Coventry areas by extending their knowledge of and enthusiasm for new Microsoft technologies through quality meetings addressed by top British and European speakers.

“Ed Gibson is recognised as one of the top computer security specialists in the Information Technology industry and it will be invaluable for regional businesses to receive the benefit of his experiences and views on a subject that is of increasing concern to everyone,” said Dr Derek Harris, Chief Executive of Aston Science Park.

For five years prior to joining Microsoft UK, Mr Gibson was assigned to the FBI’s Legal Attaché office at the US Embassy in London, where he was responsible for all FBI cyber, hi-tech, cyber-terrorism and infrastructure investigations in the UK. His leadership resulted in the creation of a model cyber program adopted by all Legal Attaché offices around the world.

Speaking alongside Mr Gibson will be London-based Dinis Cruz, an experienced security consultant, and Barry Dorrans, who provides expert witness services, design, development and mentoring with Charteris plc.

Dominic Gill, of iCentrum, commented: “The Roadshow promises to be an informative, thought-provoking and, above all, memorable occasion. It’s also free to attend, but as places are limited it is best to make sure of your attendance by registering your interest as soon as possible.  To do so, log on to http://www.edgibsonontheroad.net/.”
