A trade mission of executives from 27 Chinese technology companies will be visiting the West Midlands on 4 June.  They are seeking opportunities to meet with local businesses and plan to attend euroLED 2008, Europe's largest solid state lighting event, which is taking place at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.   This latest delegation builds on the growing relations between China, the West Midlands and UK Trade and Investment (UKTI).

The mission has been facilitated by the West Midlands ICT Cluster, in conjunction with euroLED organisers and has the full support of UKTI. The mission, from the Chongqing Region of China includes CTO/CEOs from 9 leading optoelectronics companies as well as senior staff within international trade organisations.

A key focus for the delegation is LED and solid state lighting.  Energy efficient LED technology has improved enormously over recent years, driven by demand for low voltage, high energy lighting and impending legislation in 2010 which will see the end of traditional incandescent light bulbs. The West Midlands has a strong lighting sector as a legacy from its pioneering work in the motor industry.

Glenn Barrowman, ICT Hub Project Manager, at Aston Science Park enthused, "This is a huge opportunity for local companies to develop international partnerships to optimize product development and supply chain routes in this growth market."

One-to-one business meetings are being set up between the Chinese representatives and UK companies, in particular Precision Engineering companies who want to incorporate LED technology into their product lines.
