Singapore visitors at Aston Science Park

International Experts in Light Illuminate Aston Science Park

As part of the international activities of the ICT Hub based at Aston Science Park, a high level delegation of Singapore companies from the Singapore Photonics Association visited Birmingham during their UK visit to hot spots in photonics expertise. The ICT Hub is an Advantage West Midlands project established to coordinate and support regional ICT activities.

Visiting companies will include senior representatives from leading photonics companies Leica, Alputer Industrial, Greenpac, Qioptiq, Island Optical Systems, Hypertronics and APP Systems Services.

UK companies taking part in a series of one to one business brokering meetings include West Midlands based Arden Photonics, Oxford Fiber, Optical Antenna Solutions and Advanced LED’s as well as technology companies from the Aston Science Park based Photonics Cluster (UK) membership and the Solid State Lighting Research Centre.

Derek Harris, Chief Executive of Aston Science Park advised, “As a Science Park with extensive international linkages we continue to support the Singapore British Business Council. Furthermore I am delighted to note that this intensive visit by the Singapore Photonics Association is a direct result of the highly successful scoping mission to Singapore last year. This mission and the scoping report undertaken by Aston Science Park on behalf of the UK Trade & Investment highlighted the synergies between the two photonics communities and the trade opportunities which could be enhanced.”

Representatives from regional ICT Cluster partners West Midlands Mobile and Wireless, RFID, Accredit UK, Cercia, ICentrum, IT Futures Open Advantage, UKITA, Medilink WM as well as UK Trade & Investment and Advantage West Midlands were present to explore international opportunities with the delegation.

Glenn Barrowman, Project Manager of the West Midlands ICT Hub concluded, "During the remainder of the UK tour the Singapore delegation visited the Technium OpTIC in St Asaph North Wales, the Centre of Excellence in Metrology for Micro Nano Technologies in Loughborough, and the Centre for Integrated Photonics in Ipswich, East of England".
