Local Enterpreneur Driving Technology Forward

6th September 2005

A Birmingham-based entrepreneur, who four years ago established a hi-tech enterprise targeting the photonics industry,  has now launched a sister-company to develop a product which will revolutionise the way in which medical and health & safety professionals assess laser hazards.

David Robinson, managing director of Aston Science Park-based Arden Photonics Ltd, has secured funding from Advantage West Midlands’ Technology Transfer Fund (TTF) to assist with research & development at start-up company Aston Medisafe Ltd, of which he is also managing director.

Mr Robinson, who has more than 20 years experience in the photonics industry, said: “At present the information required to fully characterise the risk posed by a laser beam to a person requires expensive and complex equipment resulting in incomplete data.  By using some newly developed technology which builds on recent advances in CCD cameras and active optics we hope to produce equipment which will change the way these measurements are done.”

Mr Robinson added that in developing the new product it was anticipated that they would use technology from Aston Medisafe’s partner company, Arden Photonics, which supplies innovative products and services to the world’s photonics industry focusing on optical fibre instrumentation, interferometry, optical metrology and laser beam profiling. It also provides design and marketing consultancy for the photonics industry.

As part of its expansion programme, Arden Photonics has relocated to the new ICT Business & Innovation Centre (iBIC) facility at Aston Science Park and has taken on an undergraduate through Graduate Advantage, an organisation offering supported graduate training positions through the STEP (Shell Enterprise Training Programme). The new addition to the team is Robert Scott, from Solihull, who is studying mathematical physics at the University of Nottingham.

“This marks another step forward for Arden,” said Mr Robinson, who added that Aston Science Park’s continuing support offered “exciting opportunities” in an environment specifically designed to help emerging technology businesses grow and develop.
