A high-tech Birmingham company has been given an award for its export effort. Arden Photonics, based in Aston Science Park, has received the UK Trade & Investment Small Exporter of the Year award.

Founded in 2001, Arden employs three and develops, manufactures and sells innovative products for the photonics industry, and provides technical marketing consultancy in the areas of optical fibre technology and optical metrology.   The company won the award for its success in the US, where it has achieved sales of pounds 175,000 over the past two years.

Managing director David Robinson said: "We are delighted to be chosen as the West Midlands' Small Exporter of the Year. At Arden Photonics we have been working hard to break in to the US market for some time now. It is very important for us to be successful overseas, and to have our achievement recognised in this way has given us the impetus to go on replicate this success in other overseas markets."

The company, which received support from UK Trade & Investment's Passport programme, is now also exporting to Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Sales to these markets have totalled about pounds 50,000 since January this year.

Brian Shaw, managing director of UK Trade & Investment's Business Group, presented the award.  He said: "This is a tremendous example of a hi-tech company that from its inception has been looking at global markets. It's the role of UK Trade & Investment to support companies such as Arden, and I'm very pleased that we have made a difference to Arden's export business."

During Mr Shaw's visit he also met with representative of Advantage West Midlands, Birmingham international trade team and the UK Photonics Cluster.

He added: "My visit has enabled me to gain a much better understanding of the world-class sectoral and technological strengths of the West Midlands region. The region is a very important part of the UK's competitive position on the global stage, with an excellent cluster of both foreign-headquartered and UK companies who are working in ever closer collaboration with UK Trade & Investment and its delivery network.

"I have been particularly impressed with the cutting-edge technology of companies like Arden Photonics."
