Birmingham’s Aston Science Park is to take the lead in a major multi million pound project to develop a Medipark in the heart of the City. The scheme is expected to bring hundreds of high quality research and technology jobs to the region. The £60 million Medipark will be developed adjacent to Heartlands Hospital, and is a joint venture between Aston Science Park, Heartlands Hospital and Birmingham City Council. The Park will bring together medical research and technology companies on a single site right next to Heartlands Hospital and close to Birmingham University’s highly regarded research facilities. The site, in Bordersley Green, will cover 12 acres. The focus of the Medipark will be cardiovascular and diabetes research and technology, but other specialties will be covered, including sports science and aftercare. | | Aston Science Park Chief Executive, Dr Derek Harris, said this was an exciting project and he was delighted that the Science Park was the driving force behind it. “This is an opportunity to bring together world class facilities, combined with medical and healthcare expertise right next to Heartlands Hospital which already has a superb reputation in many fields. It will give the Hospital easy access to research and technology facilities, and technology companies ready access to the Hospital. Importantly it will also provide local jobs,” he said. Leading research scientists from GlaxoSmithKline are already working with Aston Science Park on the make-up and infrastructure of the Medipark.
